Birth, marriage, and death records are called Vital Statistics. The Provincial Archives of Alberta holds hundreds of thousands of vital statistic records. The Provincial Archives of Alberta provides access to: birth records that are 120 years or older (from the date of birth) marriage records that are 75 years or older (from the date of marriage)

The Provincial Archives of Alberta has a copy of the ‘Index to the Registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths 1870 to 1905’ prepared by the Edmonton Branch of the Alberta Genealogical Society. These are not the original registrations, but are an index compiled of all three types of events.

Marriage records in Alberta are not public until after 76 years have passed from the date of marriage. To apply for a genealogical search of marriage records less than 75 years old, you must be able to show that the bride and groom are deceased and that you are an eligible next-of-kin (parent, sibling, children or spouse). A designated agent cannot be used to obtain a marriage search letter. Historic records. Anyone may apply for a copy of a person's historic Registration of Marriage through the Provincial Archives of Alberta after 75 years have passed from the date of marriage. Cost. There is a $20 government fee for each marriage document ordered.
